"The American labor movement is not only alive and well. It’s kicking and fighting, too.

Since the onset of Covid, American workers have experienced a resurgence of union activity and interest in unions. Beginning with health and safety concerns during the early days of the pandemic, followed by rising inflation during the recovery, local unions have been taking a more aggressive approach in contract negotiations. They are demanding larger wage increases, better scheduling practices, stronger safety measures, the end of two-tier benefits and pay schemes, and more."

"Thousands of workers around the US are going on strike or threatening to do so heading into October...

According to the labor action tracker at Cornell University, strikes in 2022 so far have significantly outpaced strike activity in 2021, with 180 strikes involving 78,000 workers in the first six months of 2022, compared with 102 strikes involving 26,500 workers in the first six months of 2021. The tracker recorded 41 strikes that started between 15 August and 15 September 2022, involving 35,250 workers."

"Support for labor unions in the U.S. is at a 57-year high, according to a new Gallup poll.

71% of Americans now approve of labor unions — up from last year's 68%. Union support is also up from 64%, before the COVID-19 pandemic, and is the highest the polling firm has recorded since 1965.

Nowadays, union drives are on a slight upswing as a recent surge in organizing activity continues at some of the biggest companies in the U.S. Workers at Starbucks, Amazon, and Chipotle have unionized in a demand for higher wages and better working conditions."

"David Bini, executive director of the Building and Construction Trades Council, said it’s ironic to see workers being potentially exploited on a property that’s meant to help other low-wage earners like teachers.

“As the mayor of Santa Clara, whether it’s a legal obligation or not, her company should be paying prevailing wages, Bini, who has not reviewed the documents in this case, told San José Spotlight. “It’s ironic that housing that’s meant to solve an affordability problem for one type of worker might use exploitative pay practices for another type of worker. We cannot solve the housing affordability crisis by underpaying construction workers and driving them into poverty.

It's time for Starbucks to live its supposed values.

After workers at over 200 stores have voted to unionize, Starbucks is only bargaining with 3 of them. And earlier this month, a federal judge ordered Starbucks to reinstate 7 Memphis workers illegally fired for union organizing.

Nearly $5 billion in new electrical vehicle charging systems are on the way, and demand for qualified installers has never been higher. That’s why International President Lonnie R. Stephenson is launching the Talent Pipeline Challenge, with a goal of getting at least 10,000 electricians across the U.S. signed up by August to be credentialed in the Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Training Program.

"A red-hot labor market that has afforded workers more bargaining power with employers is fueling a string of recent union victories at high-profile U.S. companies. Workers have voted to unionize for the first time in recent weeks at Trader Joe’s and Chipotle. Unions have also made significant inroads at Amazon, Starbucks, Apple and REI, employers that have long resisted unionization.

Behind these small, but notable, victories is renewed popular support among Americans for the labor movement: 71% of Americans approve of unions, matching a 53-year high, according to a Gallup poll released Tuesday."

Monday, the National Labor Relations Board ruled that Tesla had violated its workers' rights by forbidding them from wearing union T-shirts at work.

This shows the difference in the new NLRB -- this ruling went contrary to the 2019 under Trump's NLRB that ruled that Walmart could limit workers' rights to wear union gear on the job.

“This historic legislation delivers funding to support clean energy projects that will create new union jobs, lower energy costs and curb the climate crisis, and middle class Americans will see no increase in taxes,
International President Lonnie R. Stephenson said. “Most importantly, it ties prevailing wage and apprenticeship requirements to tax credits for clean energy generation like nuclear, solar and wind and puts into law stiff penalties for violators that choose the low road. We’ve really never seen anything like it when it comes to protecting union workers.

Among the highlights of the bill is a tax credit to make it easier for Americans to purchase electric cars. Transportation is responsible for 27% of greenhouse gas emissions in the United States, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. IBEW members are already at work building approximately 500,000 new electric vehicle charging stations from President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law enacted last year.

Other incentives in the bill will provide a boost to traditional forms of energy generation that employ thousands of IBEW members, including nuclear and carbon capture on coal and gas power plants, along with a new credit for developing solar and wind energy components.

For instance, nuclear power plants – currently the nation’s largest producer of carbon-free energy, and a leading employer of IBEW members – will be eligible for an estimated $30 billion in tax credits over the next 10 years, according to the Congressional Budget Office.

“The Inflation Reduction Act pairs the historic clean energy investments necessary to reduce carbon emissions by nearly 40% by 2030 with labor standards that promote family-sustaining jobs, Stephenson said. “It also makes important strides in deficit reduction already underway, which will help bring down inflation.

More good news in San Jose!

"A new San Jose advisory group authorized to give out millions in grant funding from Google is now in the making.

Approximately $155 million in funding from the Silicon Valley tech giant will soon be funneled into a 13-member advisory commission appointed by the San Jose City Council. Known as the Community Stabilization and Opportunity Pathways Fund Commission, the group will determine how to disperse millions to communities at risk of being priced out of San Jose, as well as funding education and entrepreneurship opportunities for residents.

Five of the members will be San Jose residents who have lived experience with homelessness, and eight must have technical experience with housing, mental health, health care or other community services."

"Employers having the most trouble filling open positions are overwhelmingly offering poor-quality jobs.

The highest quit rates are in accommodation and food services–an industry dominated by low wages, few benefits, and little employment security or stability.

However, pay is not the only determinant of job quality. Workers are looking for jobs where their work is valued and respected, jobs that offer growth opportunities, and the chance to build financial security."

The June 7 primary election was one of the best elections ever for IBEW 332. Every single labor-endorsed candidate in our priority races either won outright or advanced to the runoff in the November 8 election. Additionally, all the ballot measures we endorsed passed. This goes to show, when IBEW members vote and get involved, we win.

Nov. 8 will be here before we know it! Check out some of the races we won in the primary and which ones are extra-important heading into the general election. We'll need all hands on deck to make sure candidates who support high standards and strong protections for workers come out on top!

"When members participate – whether that’s in union meetings, political activities, or community service events – we are stronger and elected leaders respect us. That comes back full circle in stronger PLAs and responsible public infrastructure projects which have a direct effect on our members’ jobs.

I firmly believe that the more we participate together, the more our union community grows. I’ve said it from day one…When we see each other as people instead of just numbers, we strengthen the most important part of being a union: our collective voice and power. I encourage all members to get involved with Local 332." - Local 332 President Javier Casillas
